Most Common Hospital Waste Definitions

Infectious waste:

Which is waste contaminated with blood and bodily fluids,bacterias and stocks of infectious agents from laboratory work, or waste from patients in isolation wards and the equipment that was used;

Pathological waste:

Which is human tissues, organs or fluids, body parts and contaminated animal carcasses;

Sharps:

Which are syringes, needles, disposable scalpels and blades, etc.;

Chemicals:

For instance solvents used for laboratory preparations, disinfectants, and heavy metals contained in medical devices (e.g. mercury in broken thermometers) and batteries;

Pharmaceuticals:

Which are expired, unused and contaminated drugs and vaccines;

Genotoxicwaste:

Which is highly hazardous, mutagenic, teratogenic1 or carcinogenic, such as cytotoxic drugs used in cancer treatment and their metabolites;

Radioactive waste:

Which is products that are contaminated by radionuclides including radioactive diagnostic material or radiotherapeutic materials;

Non-hazardous or general waste:

This waste does not pose any particular biological, chemical, radioactive or physical hazard.
